It's been just over a year since the first episode of Spoiled To Perfection premiered, and being that each episode is produced in Sonoma County, it was fitting to do an episode about wine! Making your own wine is easy, and who better to teach us how than our host and winemaker, Garrett Martin. Garrett has teamed up with his son, and possibly, future winemaker, Isaac, to show us how it's done!
Garrett has always been captivated by food and wine. While he was studying psychology at Sonoma State, he was working at a local, Petaluma wine bar and restaurant. He began to wonder if he had discovered another career path that would allow him to be inspired by flavor. So he started experimenting with fermentation at home. He made beer, mead, wine, cheese and bread. He eventually started taking classes, working for the SRJC Vineyard and began applying for cellar jobs. More than 10 years ago, Garrett started woking for a tiny Sonoma winery, cleaning the floors drains and tanks, truly starting from below the ground and working his way up.
Garrett is now the head winemaker for Adobe Road Winery, a small, craft winery, born and raised in Petaluma, kind of like Garrett and Isaac! They make over 12 different varieties, emphasizing Cabernet, Rhone styles and blends, using grapes from both Napa and Sonoma. Garrett and his wife instill encouragement and curiosity into their children everyday and the crew was blown away by how enthusiastic Isaac was to assist his dad in this home wine making experiment. He even snuck some yeast into a bowl after the shoot, and began feeding it sugar! He has since taken what he calls his "Yeastie Bubbies" home and been feeding them sugar every night!
